Results

REWE Dortmund uses NIMMSTA Smart Watches in its meat plant to efficiently pick up to 250 tonnes of meat and sausages every day. The watches allow logistics staff to keep their hands free during the workflow, optimise picking performance with fast scans and offer a user-friendly application. With NIMMSTA, REWE Dortmund was able to reduce search times by up to 45 minutes per logistician per shift, resulting in an impressive saving of 270 hours or 15% per month. The smart wearables are robust and highly temperature-resistant.

„Our employees are very enthusiastic about the NIMMSTA Smart Watch and so am I - now that the watches have been in use for almost three years, we can say that we save an average of 5 seconds per scan. That is a sensational workflow optimisation.“

About Rhenus Automotive

At REWE Dortmund‘s meat plant, up to 225 tonnesof meat are moved for retail every day and 25 tonnesof sausage are produced. To increase the efficiencyof the picking processes, the company decided to usethe NIMMSTA Smart Watch.

Challenge

Up to 250 tonnes of meat and sausages have to be processed daily in a meat plant, which requires a high level of intralogistical effort. The site receives pre-packaged meat products in Euro crates, some of which are stored in a fully automated picking system and picked for around 400 stores. To increase the efficiency of the processes, the company was looking for a smart, hands-free scan wearable that could withstand extreme temperatures in the meat plant.

In January 2021, REWE Dortmund decided to use NIMMSTA Smart Watches, which fulfil both requirements. The integration of the devices went smoothly according to the plug & play principle, so that the logisticians were ready to work immediately. During order picking, the smart watch displays the scanned barcodes and provides feedback as to whether the data has been correctly transferred to the merchandise management system.

Solution

The NIMMSTA Smart Watch is available in two versions: Mid Range (MR) for distances up to 4 metres and Standard Range (SR) up to 0.64 metres. REWE Dortmund uses the MR version, as a greater range is important for picking the Euro crates. Weighing just 45 g, the watch is barely noticeable when worn. It enables 8,000 scans and up to 4 scans per second, which significantly increases the daily picking performance of over 3,200 scans.

The battery life supports multi-shift operation and the battery reaches 80% charge in 55 minutes. The watches are robust, comply with the IP 65 standard, can be used at temperatures between 0 °C and 50 °C and can withstand drops from up to 100 cm onto steel.

Experience

REWE Dortmund has been using NIMMSTA in its meat processing plant for almost three years and has achieved impressive results. The requirement to keep hands free during the work process has been completely fulfilled, which the logistics staff are very enthusiastic about. According to Mario Rittscher, the search time per logistician has been reduced by up to 45 minutes per shift, saving REWE 270 hours per month. The robustness of the Smart Watch remains unimpressed even at low temperatures of 0 to 2 degrees Celsius.
